Hey everyone! ๐Ÿ‘‹
As part of my #90DaysOfDevOps journey (Week 1 - Networking), I spent time exploring one of the most essential topics for DevOps โ€” Networking Protocols.

Whether youโ€™re managing servers, deploying applications, or setting up CI/CD pipelines, understanding how different protocols work is super important. So, in this blog, Iโ€™ll walk you through some of the most used networking protocols and their relevance to DevOps โ€” in simple terms! ๐Ÿš€

What Are Networking Protocols?

Think of networking protocols as rules that allow computers and systems to talk to each other.
Just like we need a common language to communicate, computers need these standard protocols to share information reliably and securely.

Most Common Networking Protocols in DevOps

1. HTTP (Port 80) & HTTPS (Port 443)

These are the protocols that power the web.

  • HTTP (HyperText Transfer Protocol) allows communication between web browsers and servers.

  • HTTPS (HTTP Secure) adds encryption using SSL/TLS โ€” making it safe for data transfer.

๐Ÿ”น DevOps Relevance:

  • Used to host web applications on cloud servers.

  • Important for configuring web servers like Nginx, Apache, or Dockerized web apps.

  • HTTPS is crucial for securing APIs and endpoints.

2. SSH (Port 22)

Secure Shell (SSH) is the protocol used to remotely connect and manage servers.
It allows you to log in securely, execute commands, and even transfer files using scp or sftp.

๐Ÿ”น DevOps Relevance:

  • SSH is used daily for connecting to AWS EC2 instances or remote servers.

  • Key for configuring automation scripts, CI/CD pipelines, and Ansible playbooks.

3. FTP (Port 21) & SFTP (Port 22)

File Transfer Protocol (FTP) helps in transferring files between systems over a network.
SFTP (Secure FTP) is the safer version that uses SSH for encrypted file transfer.

๐Ÿ”น DevOps Relevance:

  • Helpful for transferring build artifacts, configuration files, or backups.

  • Often automated through scripts or CI/CD jobs.

4. DNS (Port 53)

Domain Name System (DNS) translates domain names (like google.com) into IP addresses (142.250.183.14).

๐Ÿ”น DevOps Relevance:

  • Crucial for setting up domains for cloud servers.

  • Used in load balancers, API gateways, and Kubernetes Ingress configurations.

  • Helps diagnose network issues using tools like dig or nslookup.

5. SMTP (Port 25), POP3 (Port 110), IMAP (Port 143)

These protocols are responsible for email communication.

  • SMTP โ€“ Sending emails.

  • POP3/IMAP โ€“ Receiving and managing emails.

๐Ÿ”น DevOps Relevance:

  • Useful when configuring alerts, notifications, and monitoring systems like Prometheus or Grafana.

  • Often used in automated pipelines that send deployment status or failure alerts.

6. NTP (Port 123)

Network Time Protocol ensures that all systems have the correct and synchronized time.

๐Ÿ”น DevOps Relevance:

  • Essential for logging, monitoring, and debugging.

  • Time synchronization helps maintain accurate event tracking across multiple servers.

7. SNMP (Port 161)

Simple Network Management Protocol is used to monitor and manage devices in a network.

๐Ÿ”น DevOps Relevance:

  • Used in infrastructure monitoring tools to collect system metrics.

  • Helps identify performance issues in real time.

๐Ÿš€ Final Thoughts

Networking is the backbone of everything in DevOps.
Whether youโ€™re deploying containers, setting up CI/CD pipelines, or configuring cloud infrastructure โ€” knowing how these protocols work will make you a more confident and capable engineer.

Iโ€™m really enjoying the process of breaking down complex networking concepts into practical learning. Next, Iโ€™ll be exploring AWS EC2 and Security Groups โ€” stay tuned! ๐Ÿ’ช
